H1N1 Hits the Ferrin Family

Monday, January 11, 2010

Halloween day, Tyler came down with what we thought was one of the many cold/virus bugs going around. It turns out it was the beginning of a month-long ordeal with the H1N1 virus. Luckily we passed it from person to person with only a slight overlap with Jay and I at the end of the month. For the kids and I, it was pretty much like a very bad cold that lingered for a long time. For Jay, it was much worse. When he came down with it, he didn't have the typical symptoms. He thought he was having an allergic reaction as his throat felt constricted, and he was having a hard time breathing. We ended up in the emergency room, where he was tested for everything under the sun, which all came back negative. After spending about 8 hours there, they finally determined that he had the H1N1. He was in bed for about a week, and his cough lasted about 3 weeks.

Because of the H1N1 going through our house, we postponed Tyler's and Dan's birthday party and celebrated it with Pat for her birthday. With the virus lasting as long as it did, Tyler did not get to have a birthday party with his friends. We tried to make up for it by getting him extra presents!

Pat, Dan and Tyler blow out the candles on their birthday cake.
